My Life

My background, experience, qualifications, skills and approach to consulting and coaching.

My background is in business management and social welfare services leadership. I was originally trained by Carl Rogers Phd, twice president of the American Psychological Society, in Person Centred individual and group work.

Graham SmithThis remains the foundation of my work which is not about giving you solutions; it is instead about helping you to utilise the energy and resources within to deliver a product that is uniquely yours.

I am married with adult children. We are fortunate and live in beautiful surroundings at the end of a country lane. In my spare time I take photographs and make pots and fire them in the kiln in the garden.

I often use these creative energies in my coaching practice. There is mounting research supporting the importance of the connection between nature and mental and emotional well being.

I have earned my living in many diverse occupations and from this draw on a wide experience of individuals and organisations to develop a broad range of transferable skills.

I grew up in a London overspill council housing estate and attended a secondary modern boy’s school known locally as ‘The Prison on the Hill’. I was once told by a job interviewer that anyone who emerged from that school with seven exam passes had to be worth interviewing.

I have worked in a scrap yard, buying and dismantling cars; served in the Royal Navy, worked as sales rep for a multinational electronics company, sold double glazing units and driven a mini cab in London.

I have managed a large county council adoption and fostering service, managing teams of social workers delivering Ofsted regulated services within complex legal frameworks.

I have managed a multi agency youth justice service responsible to many separate criminal courts,  have taught pottery in a sink estate secondary school, managed a large youth centre, and managed child protection services for the most vulnerable group of children in some of the most socially deprived areas in the UK.

I am a qualified coach, teacher and youth & community worker. I am also a qualified and registered social worker.

I have a Masters degree, two post graduate diplomas in psychotherapy, and an Institute of Family Therapy recognised  certificate in family therapy.

I hold Institute of Management accredited post graduate diplomas in operational management and in strategic management.

I am Prince2 qualified and hold an Institute of Leadership and Management level 5 qualification in performance coaching and leadership.

I was trained in Person Centred Psychotherapy by Carl R Rogers and this has remained the most influential aspect of an ongoing professional education.
